A Summer Practice You Can Start Today

|Shaina Brooks

I want to tell you something I wish someone had told me earlier.

The practices that actually change how you feel are not the ones that require the most from you. They are not the elaborate morning routines you see on social media, the ones that start at 5am and involve seventeen steps and a perfectly lit kitchen. They are not the weekend retreats or the hour-long sessions or the apps that send you notifications you eventually start ignoring.

The practices that stick are the ones that ask so little of you that showing up feels easier than not.

That is what I had in mind when I built The Phoenix Candles. Not another thing to add to the list. Something that works alongside you in the moments you are already living.

Here is what that actually looks like.

Start Where You Are

The first thing I want you to release is the idea that a meaningful practice requires a perfect moment.

It does not.

The woman with two kids and a full-time job and a household that runs on her attention does not have perfect moments. She has real ones. A few minutes before the house wakes up. The space between closing the laptop and starting dinner. The end of the day when the noise finally settles and she is still sitting with everything she carried through it.

Those are the moments I make candles for. Not the curated ones. The real ones.

So start there. Wherever you are right now. That is enough.

Light the Candle

This sounds simple because it is.

Light Optimism. Set it somewhere in your line of sight, on the kitchen counter, the bathroom shelf, the windowsill where the afternoon light comes through. You do not need to sit down. You do not need to stop what you are doing. You just need to let the fragrance arrive.

The bergamot will start working before you have registered it consciously. That is not poetry. That is Aromachology. Scent reaches the brain's emotional center faster than any other sense, which means the shift begins before you have made a single decision about how you want to feel.

This is the part that matters most and asks the least of you.

Write One Thing Down

Every Phoenix candle comes with an intention card. It is small, shaped like a coaster, designed to rest beneath the flame while the candle burns above it.

I did not include it as packaging. I included it as a prompt.

Write one word on it. One thought. One thing you want to carry through the rest of the day or release before tomorrow. It does not need to be profound. It does not need to be legible to anyone but you. It just needs to be honest.

Tuck it under the candle. Let it stay there while the bergamot does its work and the wooden wick crackles low and steady and the citrine waits sealed beneath the wax.

Your intention stays close. A quiet anchor for whatever you are moving toward.

This is the whole practice. I mean that literally. There is nothing else required.

Let the Senses Do the Rest

I want to explain something about why this works, because I think it matters.

Most of the advice women receive about self-care asks them to engage their minds first. Journal about your feelings. Set your intentions. Visualize the outcome you want. Reflect on your day.

All of that has value. But it also requires something from a mind that has already been working since before the alarm went off. And a mind that is tired tends to resist being asked to do more, even when the more is good for it.

What Aromachology offers is a different entry point.

The scent arrives first. The nervous system responds before the mind has had a chance to weigh in. The crackle of the wooden wick signals safety on a level that bypasses conscious thought entirely. The matte peach vessel sits in peripheral vision and does its quiet color psychology work without requiring any attention at all.

By the time you are aware that something has shifted, your body is already there.

This is what somatic healing looks like in a practical context. Not a session or a program or a commitment. Just a candle, an intention card, and a few minutes in whatever moment you are already in.

One More Thing About Summer

Summer has a particular kind of permission built into it, even when it does not feel that way.

The pace slows, even slightly. The structure loosens. There is more light in the day and a little more room in the spaces between things. For the woman who has been running since January, that room can feel unfamiliar. Even uncomfortable.

But it is also an opening.

Not to become a different person or overhaul your life or finally develop the elaborate self-care practice you have been putting off. Just to notice that the moment you are in has a little more space than the ones that came before it. And to use that space for something that belongs entirely to you.

Light the candle. Write the word. Let the senses do what they were designed to do.

That is the practice. That is enough. And it is available to you right now, in the moment you are already in, without changing a single thing about your day.
